HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-12 Bicycle Friendly Community RESOLUTION 2018- fl A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF OCEAN CITY TO ESTABLISH A BICYCLE & PEDESTRIAN ADVISORY COMMITTEE (BPAC) WHEREAS, at the November 14, 2017 Transportation Committee Meeting, the Committee reviewed the concept of the Town applying for designation as a Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) and provided direction for this concept to be presented to the "Green Team" Committee for further review; and WHEREAS, at the January 10, 2018 Coastal Resources Legislative Committee "Green Team" Meeting,the Committee voted to provide the Mayor& City Council with a presentation to for the Town to consider pursuing designation as a BFC; and WHEREAS, at the March 13, 2018 Council Work Session, the Mayor& City Council reviewed the Agenda Item to consider the Town pursuing designation as a BFC and at the April 10, 2018 Council Work Session, the Mayor& City Council approved the motion for the Town to pursue designation as a BFC; and WHEREAS, establishing a BPAC is an integral component of the Town's interest in becoming a BFC; and WHEREAS, the Town seeks to provide the following benefits of becoming a BFC: Safety while biking in Town, increased opportunities to apply for Grant Funding; better infrastructure for promoting bicycle Tourism activities; improving Health and Recreation opportunities; increasing Property Values in Town; and decreasing Traffic congestion and vehicle emissions; and WHEREAS, Maryland is recognized as the #11 "Bicycle Friendly State" by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) 2017 Rankings; and WHEREAS, other jurisdictions in Maryland have successfully created BPAC's, including: Frederick, Hagerstown, Baltimore, Columbia, Salisbury, Rockville, and DC; and WHEREAS, the Town is actively engaged in establishing bike routes in Town, with LAW OFFICES existing bike routes established on the following Town owned streets: St. Louis Avenue, AYRES,JENKINS, Assawoman Drive, Jamaica Avenue, Sinepuxent Avenue, and Wight Street.
